| Kaitaia Fire Police |
Kaitaia Fire Police / Operational Support Unit was established in 1967 with members manning the intersections of the towns main street when the siren sounded, clearing the way for the fire-fighters to respond unpeeded. The members were local businessmen who's shops were on the intersections. This practice was stopped in the mid eighties by the traffic department of the time. The Unit now assists at any incident of consequence and especially at motor vehicle crashes. Four of the six members are fire-fighters who have transferred over to the unit so they can also respond as fire-fighters should the brigade have crewing problems. They have a response van set up with lights and siren and a range of safety equipment aboard. The unit responds to about 150 incidents a year.
